Ingredients

  • 2 lbs pork shoulder or pork butt, cut into long strips
  • 2 tablespoons honey (plus extra for basting)
  • 1 tablespoon hoisin sauce
  • 1 tablespoon oyster sauce
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon Chinese Shaoxing wine or dry sherry
  • 2 teaspoons five-spice powder
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • Red food coloring (optional, for traditional color)

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine honey, hoisin sauce, oyster sauce, soy sauce, Shaoxing wine, five-spice powder, sesame oil, sugar, garlic, and food coloring (if using). Mix well.
  2. Add pork strips to the marinade, coating thoroughly. Cover and refrigerate for at least 4 hours or overnight.
  3. Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking tray with foil and place a wire rack on top.
  4. Place marinated pork on the rack. Roast for 20 minutes, then baste with reserved marinade and turn. Roast another 20 minutes.
  5. Brush with extra honey and broil on high for 2-3 minutes until charred at the edges. Let rest before slicing.
