Ingredients

  • 4 boneless skinless chicken thighs
  • 2 tablespoons hoisin sauce
  • 2 tablespoons honey
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon oyster sauce
  • 1 tablespoon Shaoxing wine (or dry sherry)
  • 1/2 teaspoon five-spice powder
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil
  • Red food coloring (optional, for classic color)

Instructions

  1. In a medium bowl, mix hoisin sauce, honey, soy sauce, oyster sauce, wine, five-spice, garlic powder, sesame oil, and a drop of red food coloring if using.
  2. Place chicken thighs in a zip-top bag or shallow bowl. Pour the marinade over the chicken and toss to coat. Let it marinate for at least 30 minutes, or overnight if you’ve got time.
  3. Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with foil and place a rack on top.
  4. Arrange marinated chicken on the rack and bake for 20 minutes.
  5. Flip the chicken and brush with remaining marinade. Bake another 10-15 minutes until cooked through and slightly charred.
  6. Let rest a few minutes before slicing. Serve hot with rice, noodles, or your favorite side.
